I’m Still Here

No, I haven’t given up on blogging after one week. Just been a long couple of weeks. A few late nights working, a few nights away on a business trip to California, some nights watching Tour replays, and the last five nights digesting Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows. I’ll try to get back to it.

How do I get started?

If I ever wanted to get serious about selling photography, I feel like I’d have to start over – ignore almost all the previous work I’ve done so far.  Not because as I take more photos, I feel like my previous work is no longer very good (though I do feel like that sometimes).  It’s actually much something much simpler than that.  How do you shoot a photo, cropping tightly to isolate a subject, yet producing a picture that can be printed in 2×3, 3×4, 4×5, 5×7, 11×14… ratios while still looking tight in each?  Why are standard picture / matte / frame sizes all in different ratios – who thought this was a good idea?

Sadly, the answer is a change in digital workflow – prep the photo, but save a copy prior to cropping.  Simple enough if I didn’t save all my photos for display already cropped.  Oh well, live & learn.  Just frustrating.

Second thought – how do I blend a “professional” photography site with a site for friends & family?  My site today has a limited set of photos on it, with a link at the very top to get to my “Personal / By Event” galleries.  Ever noticed it?  That’s where most of the new material goes.  Only those I consider the 40 or so best shots in each category go into the main galleries, so that site doesn’t change much.  I’ve considered breaking them into two separate sites, or maybe making a ”Recent Additions” gallery that links to the 2007 page.  Thoughts?  And how do I fit a blog onto a “professional” photography site – afterall that would help keep the site fresh as well?  Would it work?  Would I need to limit what I write about?  That doesn’t seem as fun.  So much to think about…
